Sharon Rodkey Smith

Clinician, Children's Choir

A native of Washington State, Sharon has returned to Spokane after a teaching career in Tacoma, Washington and Omaha, Nebraska.  In Omaha, she taught vocal music at all grade levels, finishing her tenure at Omaha Central High School as one of the choral conductors there.  Sharon directed Mini Singers, a district children's choir for 16 years.  She was the Founding Director of Cantori with the Nebraska Children's Choruses.   This choir performed at state and divisional conventions for MENC and ACDA, as well as on regional and national tours.  Sharon has been on staff with NCSICA for the past three years.

Ms. Smith serves as a lecturer, conductor and clinician.  She is past President of the Nebraska Choral Directors Association, and served as the Repertoire and Standards Chair for Children's Choirs for the North Central Division of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), as well as Co-Chair of the 2006 Regional Convention.  While in Nebraska, Sharon was a recipient of the Alice Buffett Award for Outstanding Teachers in the Omaha Public Schools, and was awarded the honor of 2005 Choral Director of the Year through the Nebraska Choral Directors Association.

Currently, Sharon directs Kinderchor, a community-based children's choir in Spokane, as well as the choir at Bethany Presbyterian Church.  She is married to Dennis, and they have three grown children and two gorgeous grandchildren.

About the Workshop

2010 marks the eighteenth year of the NCSICA Children's Chorus Workshop. Limited to the first 150 unchanged voices, the choristers will receive instruction, materials, meals, lodging, T-shirt, keychain, and organized activities for a three day period.

At the culmination of their stay on campus, the children's chorus will perform for the middle and high school participants on Sunday afternoon, at 3:30 p.m. in the Concert Hall. Parking for this event is only available behind Kitteredge Theater.

This chorus is open to children with unchanged voices ages 8-12 years, grades 3-7. Counselor to child ratio will be 1:18. Directors are urged to chaperone their own students and may serve as counselors.  Every effort will be made to ensure the privacy and safety of each chorister!

Choristers will be housed two children to a room. We are unable to accommodate commuting students. Meals will be served in the university cafeteria, a short walk from the dormitory. Cost for the three days will be $195.00.

Registration procedures and late fees apply in the same manner as Middle/Senior campers. Due to limited housing applicants will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Non-counseling adults/parents may register to room with their own child and attend all rehearsals for the same fee as the choristers.

A DVD/CD can be ordered in Kitteredge Lobby immediately prior and following the open rehearsal on Sunday. CD/DVDs will be mailed approximately 90 days after the close of camp at the cost of $25.00.

This long weekend will be a wonderful initiation into summer music camp for these talented youngsters.
